AfDB and AfCFTA: A Strategic Alliance to Accelerate Africa’s Integration

The President of the African Development Bank Group (AfDB), Sidi Ould Tah, recently met in Abidjan with Wamkele Mene, Secretary-General of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA)

Through a $16 million support package, the AfDB financed the Institutional Support Programme for the AfCFTA, enabling the establishment and operationalization of its Secretariat. The results are significant: The AfCFTA Secretariat is now fully operational and equipped with modern trade tools such as the electronic tariff book, rules of origin certificates, the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS), and the Adjustment Fund. More than 5,000 certificates of origin have already been issued, facilitating real intra-African trade. Between 2022 and 2024, the AfDB approved $7.23 billion in infrastructure investments to strengthen regional connectivity and economic corridors, particularly in low-income countries. Today, 54 countries have signed and 49 have ratified the AfCFTA Agreement, making Africa the world’s largest integrated market, with 1.5 billion consumers and a combined GDP of more than $3 trillion.
